True Meaning of an Engagement Ring

I remember the day that my now husband got down on one knee and asked me to be his wife. In his hand was a beautiful sparkling diamond ring. Twenty years later we are still happily married, and I am happily officiating weddings for loving couples.

Historical Meaning of a ring:

Every ceremony started with an engagement but not necessarily an engagement ring. I began to wonder how this tradition of presenting a prospective bride with a diamond ring emerged. I did a little research and discovered that historically, a Roman custom required married women to wear rings attached to small keys. Anthropologists believe this tradition gave ownership rights of wives to husbands.

True Meaning:

Today an engagement ring no longer signifies a human possession, instead it is worn as an important symbol for two people to share. Dedication, love and commitment are outwardly expressed to each other. The ring symbolizes the beautiful journey that two people embark upon when they decide to spend their lives together as husband and wife.

Ring Ceremony:

During the wedding service I like to include the dedication of the rings as a ceremony within the ceremony. This means I take the time to explain the importance of the rings in the marriage relationship.

The following is a sample of a ring ceremony.

“And now we come to the presentation of rings by which you symbolize and bind your love. The ring is a symbol of the unbroken circle of love. Love freely given has no beginning and no end, no giver and no receiver for each is the giver and each is the receiver. May these rings always remind you of the vows you have taken.”

Of course each ring ceremony, as is the entire wedding ceremony customized and personalized for your wedding day.

I would love to co-create a wedding ceremony with you.
